Annual Walk for Change: Ajax to Toronto

Once a year, I try to walk roughly a marathon distance to Toronto from Ajax in an effort to inspire change for causes I believe in.

This year, it was for litter cleanup. Over the summer there have been so many times where I thought:

  1. We either need more trash cans in every city or volunteer-based collection agencies.
  2. We need to make a concentrated effort as a society to stop littering so much; Leave No Trace.

I think Covid really did shape us into being less community-based, and I don’t think it has to be like that.

The Impact

I collected 8 garbage bags over the span of 9 hours. I had a couple of people stop to ask me what I was doing or why. Well, I’d be curious too if I saw a guy with a garbage bag strapped to his backpack.

Reflections for next time:

  • I need to be more proactive about initiating conversations. Those are what will make the biggest difference, not the relatively minuscule amount of trash I’ve collected.

There were a lot of strange things I saw too which made it kind of fun to try and visualize what the story was (e.g., a single sock). &nbsp &nbsp
